About this course

A very basic, hands-on introduction to laparoscopy for doctors with little or no laparoscopic experience. Short focused talks on the tower, safe access and instrument handling are followed by supervised practice at two stations, each with a laparoscopy tower and a simulator.

Learning outcomes

  • Set up a laparoscopic tower and troubleshoot common camera, light and insufflation problems.
  • Describe the principles of safe abdominal access, pneumoperitoneum and port placement.
  • Navigate with a 30° laparoscope and coordinate with the operating surgeon.
  • Perform basic bimanual tasks (peg transfer, precision cutting and clipping) on simulators and models.
  • Tie a basic intracorporeal knot on a training model.

Hands-on stations

Ten participants form two groups of five. Each station has one laparoscopy tower and one simulator and is led by one expert; within a station, trainees alternate between the tower and the simulator. Each group spends 90 minutes at each station, followed by one hour of coached repeat practice, giving 4 hours of hands-on time.

  1. Tower: set-up, 30° camera navigation and camera–operator teamwork on a box model. Simulator: peg transfer and precision cutting.

    Sherif Hakky

  2. Tower: tissue handling, clipping and cutting with safe use of energy on an ex-vivo model. Simulator: introduction to intracorporeal suturing and knot tying.

    Faheem Bassiony

Good to know

  • Practical times are scheduled group rotations, not individual operating time.
  • Places are totals per course, not remaining places. The registration team confirms current availability, and a waiting list opens when a course is full.
  • Already registered for the congress? Tell the team which course you want so it is added to your booking.
  • After you register, the registration team confirms your place and arranges payment with you.

Assessment

Timed basic tasks (peg transfer and precision cutting) at the start and end of the day, with structured observation of camera and instrument handling and individual feedback. This introductory course supports, but does not replace, supervised laparoscopic training.

Based on: SAGES Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) programme; OSATS structured assessment of technical skills.
